Once Upon A Time I looked Like This

Do you ever look at old pics and think, YIKES, that was me? Daughter loves pics, old and new. She literally uncovered this one of me. Honeymoon 1952, Miami Beach My first love and I got sunburned on one side of our bodies because we talked for hours lying on chaise lounges near the beach. That night, lathered in sun burn lotion, we saw Singing In The Rain. Two weeks in Miami Beach, honeymoon for lovers, then off to Texas where Bud learned to fly Bombers, we had many children and the girl from Chicago became a wife, a mother and part of the Strategic Air Command. The Korean War gripped us. Wives watched as the pilots and crews flew away for months on Temporary Duty. Women bonded, parades when the planes returned. Babies were born. A cycle of life far from my sheltered home in Chicago. A great life by comparison to the wars fought now.

We thank every veteran for serving in the military.

Farewell, Hello is a story , partly true, of two young lovers in Chicago. He’s a senior in high school; she’s a virgin (gasp) and a sophomore in the same school.

Hi from Charmaine Gordon and welcome to Meet My Character Blog Tour. Without further ado, I introduce you to Joy Davison, the fifteen year old heroine in my latest recent, like last week, book titled Farewell, Hello, Vanilla Heart Publishing. Take it away, Joy.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, my real story begins in 1948 when I met a senior, the most popular boy in high school, and Mother said, “Don’t allow privileges” and I didn’t know what she meant. Danny and I fell in love and now two years later, he’s furious with me and just hung up the phone from his base at San Antonio, Texas where he’s about to graduate from pilot school.

I’m crying staring at my sparkling diamond ring on the third finger of my left hand. I had to postpone our wedding because Mother is suddenly sick with something called Multiple Sclerosis and the doctor says she may not live long. Father says family comes first and since I’m the daughter, I have to take care of sweet Mother. I know in my heart Danny and I will find each other. The main concern is the war in Korea. Little did I know then, there were many obstacles to overcome more than a war.”

And Then She Said. . .

 

 

 

Grandest, now age six and a half, goes to half day summer camp. I drove her first day since daughter, voted best of the best or something wonderful at her school, still had one day left to work. I’m the go-to Granny. Blond hair already askew, she marched confidently in waving to everyone from last year. The differ this time is the way she introduced me.

“This is Granny. She writes books. Her new book is called “Farewell,” she tugged on my shorts. “Grans, what’s the next word of your funny title.”

“Farewell, Hello.”

“Isn’t that backwards?” By now she had the attention of counselors and parents.

“No. Young lovers say farewell when the boy goes off to war. Years go by and she doesn’t know if they’ll ever meet again.”

“Oh, I get it. Then she says Hello. Cool. Yay.”

“And you know you can get free four chapters of Farewell, Hello by using a certain link.” But by now she was playing with some kids forgetting about Grans.

“I’ll see you at noon.” My feet dance across the gymnasium floor as I leave.

The expression, “They grow up so fast” is often heard and oh so true. I never dreamed I’d help raise an infant when daughter had grandest yet here I am, surviving with a writing career, a dear second husband, and almost daily care of my best little pal.

The many faces of our lovely girl. This one shows her walking away, so confident in short strides.I’m thinking, “Don’t walk too far, too fast, too soon, precious child.”

The computer is not cooperating with me right now so I’ll post this incomplete and try tomorrow,  another day. Thanks for checking in, my friends.

You’ll laugh and cry with the story; references to Seventeen Magazine and not allowing ‘privileges’ to boys until after marriage may seem funny and archaic but that’s how life was in a time I know very well. Authentic and so real, I cried and laughed writing this story.
