5/17/15 WEWRIWA

Happy Month of May Older Americans Month. I love the idea of celebrating a whole month for the elderly Americans. You may not be there yet but one day you may wake up and find you’re a grandparent just like me.

It’s also almost Sunday and time to share our snippets so let’s have at it. My story is titled Spreading Her Wings. Sally Kirkwood is the friendly neighborhood reporter who helps Teresa find her daughter Misty, self involved in preparing for a Broadway audition.
As many of you know I was an actor in NYC for years. My take on this story is very real.

excerpt in eight:
In the darkened theatre, several men sat talking, computers on laps, taking notes while the director and his assistant rubbed their hands in anticipation.

Jerry Kaufman, the chief producer’s job was to gather the money to get the play up and running and already the men here had already pledged a bunch of dough.

The last man to arrive came up the aisle with a gawky girl in tow.

“Oh shit, please tell me she’s not the daughter he wants as the lead in the play.”

Seymour, his assistant, nudged him in the arm and said, “Jerry, she’s the girl O’Malley wants as the lead
and right away I can tell she’s a triple threat; can’t dance, can’t sing, can’t act.”

“The nerve of him coming in late when all the boys and girls are already lined up.”

“Money makes the world go around, Jerry so work with it and say hello at least.”

Jerry rose from his slump in the auditorium; “Hi Mr. O’Malley. How are you and who is this young lady?”

11/30/14 WEWRIWA

Neither storms nor ice and sleet kept us from enjoying Thanksgiving Dinner this year. Always grateful to be alive with our loved ones, we drove to daughter’s to put the finishing touches on a splendid meal. and here we are to enjoy another WEWRIWA Sunday where constructive critique is the watchword.

Last week Sally Atwood had an offer she couldn’t refuse from the sophisticated owner of a Cable Company. Watch out for men named Lance, ladies. She’s talking strictly business and he’s talking monkey business with big bucks! She returns home, hurries to find an old book to search for an answer.

Sally used a step stool to reach the top shelf in order to skim the titles and there, tucked into a corner, was the book about the stages of women’s growth.
Curled up in the comfortable old leather chair, Sally searched for the chapter she had to read to understand what happened with Lance Jordan today and why he’d be attracted to a middle aged woman.
She read: The middle years woman is just coming into her own, blossoming after years of caring for her family instead of the focus turning inward on herself.  Is she content to stay at home and be the caring wife and homemaker or does she choose to go out in the world to follow a dream of being an artist, a writer, an actor? Look in the mirror, dear lady and see there is a depth to you now from life experience.  You have a scent about you and I’m not referring to perfume; the answer is pheromones. This comes from personal sex with your mate; you are comfortable and other men feel it.  Look your best even when you go to the grocery store and see how many heads turn in your direction.

11/9/14 WEWRIWA

Baby, it’s cold outside but are we worried? Not a bit. I’m delighted with sales rising for my latest book, Help Wanted. Readers want to move right into River’s Edge where the motto is Kindness to Strangers. Just like the good old days where neighbors took care of friends in need and children played outside without fear.

Today I continue with Sally Atwood returning to the cable company thinking she’d knock Jerald Adams socks off with the Grace Trumbull interview with the sad Saluki and give her the promised job.

Excerpt in eight:

The same receptionist checked the appointment book and with a sour look meant to pierce a heart, glowered at Sally; “You don’t have an appointment.”
Using her new authoritarian voice, Sally said, “Mr. Adams requested that I come in as soon as possible since I have fulfilled his assignment to obtain the in-depth interview with Ms. Grace Trumbull; I have it right here.”
“Oh. Just a minute. ” Out and in, she returned, a smug look on her face to say, “Mr. Adams said he’s not interested in such an interview and thanks you for your time.”
The words from the movie Dirty Dancing popped into Sally’s mind, “Nobody puts baby in the corner.”

Sally Atwood stormed through the door, eyes blazing.
The large imposing man sat, feet crossed at the ankles up on his desk, puffing on a cigar, king of a small kingdom, eyes widened at Sally’s unexpected intrusion.
“In good faith, I followed your assignment with a promise for a job and after I fulfilled my part I find I’ve wasted Grace Trumbull’s time and she’s an important member of River’s Edge Counsel.”  Sally spun on her heels and left Jerald Adam’s office.

11/2/14 WEWRIWA

T’was a cold and rainy Halloween but who cares. I found a mini Baby Ruth bar outside. We live in a QUIET neighborhood with no kids around. Yet every year husband says, “did you buy candy? And he doesn’t eat candy. Not  a single trick or treaters came by. What are we to do with those cute little Tootsie rolls calling to me? I ask you, my friends. It’s a puzzlement.

Meanwhile it’s wonderful WEWRIWA Sunday and you know me. I write, no matter what. Chelle Cordero came up with the title Help Wanted, Vanilla Heart Publishing said send it over and now it’s available. So yippee and Happy Dance-here’s another eight. No longer a WIP but a published story. Last week Sally was allowed to watch and record a session with a sad Saluki and Grace Trumbull known as the dog communicator, owner of the Pet Emporium. Afterward, Sally meets with Grace for a private in-depth interview in the alcove where it’s quiet.

excerpt in eight:

A breathless Grace entered the small room about ten minutes later and said, ” I refused to let Sammy go home with her until she buys another companion Saluki to keep him company.  ” Pouring tea and munching on a brownie, she continued, “I hope she takes my advice or she’ll have to sue me for custody.”

Camcorder on,Sally began,“You found River’s Edge how, if it’s not too personal.”
Grace’s big brown eyes focused on a middle distance, “The kindness of strangers led me here and here I’ve stayed to open the Pet Emporium with Jim Trumbull.
“And your gift, people call you the ‘dog whisperer or communicator, and watching you with the magnificent dog, I could swear you understood each other.”
Frowning, a few beats passed before Grace answered, her face a study of deep thought and Sally let the camcorder capture her mood.
“I call it a communication just as you and I are doing now, not a mystical talent as far as I’m concerned.

As for Jerry Abrams, that S.O.B., he waved a carrot in front of your nose by saying get an in-depth interview with reclusive Grace Trumbull so we’re going to knock his socks off with this interview and you’ll get the job.”
