“Making Your Bones. ..”

All moviegoers have seen the Godfather and maybe the wonderful Prizzi’s Honor. We’ve seen, read, or heard about mobsters’ who “make their bones” with the first kill. But, and here comes the big Butt as I like to say, we have a four and a half pound kitten named Lily. Funny, fast, and adorable, Lily surprised me with a little gift a few days ago. She made her bones, our kitty while the ten year old big mamoo Tabby named Tony sat and watched her play rough and tough with a super small mouse. Then, while I wrote a chapter in my new book, Lily shoved the deceased under the door making funny sounds of kitten delight.

After the husband tended to  burial of said deceased, Lily decided she needed many hugs and kisses and climbed up on the desk to snuggle. I didn’t agree and patted her little back until the rascal fell asleep. Who needed kisses knowing where her mouth and paws had been moments before.

Our home is a small cat kingdom right now. Amusing, tiresome and a lot of work for this author. If you have pet stories you’d like to share, please jump in. As for me, I do love writing about pets. They add warmth, humor and love to every story I write.

If you enjoy stories about lots of pets and humans, do check out She Didn’t Say No, a mature romance with an unusual twist.Say No CVR ARe

5.0 out of 5 stars Winning story about hope, love and survival February 27, 2014
by Judith Audevard

So nice to read a book where the heroine is treated kindly, has special loves and successfully survives life traumas. I loved that everything about Meridith and her surroundings were clearly described. From her early college days to becoming a mature woman, the reader is kept involved and is pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

She Didn’t Say No is narrated and produced by Julie Sears, professional voiceover artist and narrator, residing in California, and co-owner of Sears Voices.

She Didn’t Say No Sneak Peek Video

or

Dear readers, watch for my next book coming soon, titled She Never Said Yes

Are we having fun yet? You bet we are.

4/6/14 WEWRIWA

We could while away the hours conferring with the flowers, consulting with the rain. . .Why do I feel like the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz? Why not? It’s Spring again and birds on the wing again-but as the old joke goes-“I always hoid the wing is on the Boid,” if I only had a brain. Are we having fun or what, my friends?

Continuing with She Never Said Yes, my WIP. Joy asked Danny to the club dinner dance, he said okay and somehow the school day passed. Walking home, they meet.

Excerpt in eight:

On the way home from school, I heard Danny call, “Hey Joy, wait up,” and at last reading Seventeen magazine paid off since I’d just memorized the latest advice column on how to talk to boys.
He carried my books and took long steps so I had to kind of double step to keep up; without saying a word he slowed and I asked my first question, number one on the list.
“What’s your favorite sport, Danny?” Grinning he opened his jacket to show off the S for soccer stitched on the white letter sweater, a big deal at our school and I wondered if he’d ever let me wear it; also something special to show a boy really liked the girl.
“And what’s your favorite sport?” he said making both of us laugh ‘cause there were no team activities for girls except cheer leading and I couldn’t do splits, pyramids, or twirl a baton.
“I’ve been dancing since I was three years old: tap, ballet, you name it and someday I plan to be a professional dancer maybe in New York but don’t you dare tell my family.”
We reached Ridgeway and Ainslie Avenue, the corner where I live and I stopped, pointed to the big house, said, “That’s my house, so don’t forget it, you” and before he knew what happened, I lifted my books from his arms and ran up the steps to the door. Dropping my key on the first try, I looked down to see Danny still standing on the corner and all I wanted to do was rush down to hug him and never let go.
Shivering from the chill October wind blowing dry leaves all over the last of green grass, I opened the heavy wooden door, closed it and leaned back, my heart beating so hard I thought Mother might hear it from the kitchen where I smelled delicious pot roast cooking.

The Beginning…Not the End, Volume 2 by Charmaine Gordon: http://t.co/yU8kKvSJo5 via @YouTube

Print or ebooks. What’s your preference?

Charmaine Headshot for Author CentralAs an author, I speak to lots of people. When we talk about preferences in print vs ebooks, they almost always hold up their hands as if they’re reading a book. I’m sure there are a zillion younger folks who laugh and say, Kindle or Nook or I thingy whatever other options rather than purchase a book. Some say they love the smell and feel of a book, the act of turning a page.

Vanilla Heart Publishing, always thinking ahead especially with my series of Mature Romances, has just this very day released Volume 2. To see three of my stories once again, under the umbrella title of The Beginning. . .Not The End warms my heart. Here come blurbs from the three stories. You’re going to love them. Trust me. I’m the author. Shamelessly, I proceed.

No Time for Green Bananas
Celeste Hamlin, seventy-five year old widow, has a goal… conquer the six mountains in the Saranac Lake region before deciding what to do with the rest of her life. Sixty-two year old Professor Paul Harris, meets the dynamic Celeste, and recalls the last words his wife said before she passed. “Find another love and begin again.” Will they begin again?

Dr. D and the Dad
A trip over a mound of sand on the beach begins a journey for Diane O’Rourke and Tony Flannigan. What a great gift for all occasions like Mother’s Day, birthdays, any days. I might just stop by and read a chapter or two for you. I did that for my daughter while on a sleep-over last Friday. We had a lot of fun ’til the dog barked and spoiled it. Labradors don’t enjoy a good book even though all my stories have dogs and cats as integral characters.

Zooming along toward spring, chipping remnants of ice to widen driveways ever hopeful to hear  birds chirping, crocus blooming and a semblance of re-awakening nature brings. Welcome friends, to another Sunday of snippets from talented authors looking toward constructive criticism. Today I continue with She Didn’t Say No, the story of Grace Meredith and what happens next after she gives in to a night of pleasure with Scott Dwyer. Thanks to everyone who left wonderful comments encouraging me in my career as an author.

Excerpt in approximately eight:

Vowing to love each other forever, finish school in a few years and begin a life together, we became the hottest unlikely new couple on campus, the studious girl and the BMOC with school the first priority. We made a promise not to interfere with our different plans because I’d be off to Purdue and he hadn’t solidified his plans yet because law schools offered scholarships for the brightest students and Scott had almost made up his mind since graduation was in June, a couple of months away.

A month later I missed my period; always on time, first I worried and kept it to myself and then frantic, I told him a big fat lie crossing my fingers and hoping to die for what I was about to say, I called my dearest love and said I had the flu and didn’t want him to catch it. Busy with finals, Scott said okay and he missed me and hoped I felt better soon and we’d be together again.

By the second late period, I was sure so I skipped classes and had someone bring assignments to my apartment, I completed my work while making a list of pros and cons, I faced the facts because by now, I’d cried too much pacing the floor alone with no one to talk to and afraid I might hurt the baby with all my grief, I reached for an inner strength to move on. Heartbroken, the practical side of me decided Scott must never know; I couldn’t burden his life, ruin his career with a baby and as for me, I’d go to Buffalo, tell my parents and they’d help me solve the problem.

My Dearest Scott, I’m saying goodbye, not because I want to but because I have to; our paths are too divergent to survive the long wait until we can be together so please, please know you are my one and only love; I wish you well; and, and I don’t know what else to say except goodbye.

The letter made no sense; choices made with no guidance; choices that changed our lives.

Charmaine Gordon

“Be careful what you say, you might end up in my book. “ I couldn’t resist buying the white sweatshirt with this written on it.

An author watches and listens always on the alert for an idea, a clue as to someone’s problem. Why the laughter; why the tears? As an author, I stalk the story and the other day at the supermarket, while shoppers scrambled to beat snow storm warnings, I saw two women talking and laughing at the end of the Mac and Cheese aisle. I stopped to buy a few single serve packs for my grandest granddaughter and listened, tuning in, interest piqued.

“Did you hear about Sheila? She found an old boyfriend from college on Facebook and friended him.”

The other woman laughed. “Of course he’d have to be an old boyfriend. She’s our age.”

I gave a furtive glance their way and made a mental note of the attractive appearances of these women. Groomed to perfection short hair, one gray, the other blond. Dressed well about seventy plus, wedding rings on both. All descriptions needed to flesh out characters when writing. Pushing the cart closer, I pulled more pasta goodies for my grandest and listened.

“Well, they got together and now they’re dating.” They continued talking, never dreaming the had planted a seed in this author’s mind.

I hurried through my grocery list, paid and drove home knowing I had to put away the frozen items and cold stuff, the heck with the rest. Oh, feed the cats and then begin to weave a story from threads of an idea.

So dear readers, if you’ve ever wondered where stories come from remember my sweatshirt and beware.

“I didn’t realize at the time while working as an actor in NYC, I’d become a sponge soaking up dialogue, setting, and stage directions. I learned many tools of writing during the years watching directors like Mike Nichols and actors including Harrison Ford, Anthony Hopkins, and Billy Crystal. And would you believe, I was Geraldine Ferraro’s stand-in leg model, my first job giving me entrée into all the Unions needed to work. More than a year ago, Weekend Writers have given new meaning to Sundays in my life. Thanks to all commenters, talented writers, with their constructive critique week after week.

I continue this week with Grace Meredith , a nineteen year old senior at a college in NY state and her first romantic encounter with the Big Man on Campus, Scott Dwyer. They’ve just stopped for burgers and fries before going to her apartment off-campus. The book is titled She Didn’t Say No, Vanilla Heart Publishing.

excerpt in eight:

First we sat on the couch and necked which led to touching and stroking each other and then , oh so politely, he asked if I minded if he did this and that and soon we were naked on my maiden double bed with pink flowered sheets and a matching spread.

“Grace, you’re so beautiful,” Scott said and fondled my breasts as if they were treasures and tasted one nipple and then the other sucking like a baby searching for milk.

My hands grabbed his head, ran my fingers through his thick curly hair and held him close never wanting him leave, my first lover, my only love.

He said, “Do you have protection?”

“I have a diaphragm and cream but I never used it,” and it occurred to me this was a funny conversation in the heat of nakedness although we didn’t laugh.

“Oh, well, this time leave it up to me but next time practice until you get it right because I have a feeling we’re gonna need a lot of protection.”

He groaned and I heard a rip of a packet and fumbling and soon he played with the dark moist space between my thighs until I lifted my hips to heaven when slowly, he entered virgin territory where only a tampon had been. No comparison here as he continued to move in a little deeper each time to break the barrier and we were one reaching for the stars.

So this is what all the fuss is all about, I thought, and wanted more.   Say No CVR ARe

Polar Vortex? Remember when the weatherperson said, “Bundle up, folks. It’s gonna be a cold one”?????????Stay warm and read another snippet from She Didn’t Say No, my latest release from Vanilla Heart Publishing, a mature romance/suspense with a twist.

When last seen, Grace reeled from her first kiss ever. Scott Dwyer, the Big Man On Campus delivered a smooch to knock her socks off. After a burger and fries on the way back to campus, she wonders what happens next, just like a writer. We all know the possibilities when we face our computers.

excerpt in eight:

After burgers, fries, and milkshakes he followed directions to my apartment and parked looking up at the nice building, he smiled. “I’ve passed this place like a zillion times never thinking the girl of my dreams might be right upstairs.”

“Girl of your dreams?” I smacked his shoulder, “You probably say that to all the girls.”

“No, Grace, I mean it; I’ve admired you for months at the library and here we are.”

Is this where I say come up and then I heard myself asking if he’d like to come up and we were inside and kissing in my quiet apartment where no one ever came until now. I always wondered what happens when two young people are alone, hormones raging but hearing about it and reading books is not the same. I wore a spring sweater set, pleated skirt, underwear, socks and sneakers; nothing sexy except my feelings and wanting him and Scott had experience on his side. Was I expected to be a casual lay? Right now, I didn’t know and didn’t care.

Thanks to everyone who commented with super constructive critique last week. I appreciate your time and good thoughts.

This week I continue with She Didn’t Say No. Taking place in 1960 where Grace Meredith, a studious nineteen year old is months away from graduating, youngest in her class. She meets Scott Dwyer, captain of the swim team, a big man on campus who takes an interest in her and when the library closes, they drive to a nearby beach in Nyack NY on a brisk early spring day.

excerpt in eight:

“There’s a small beach a little way up over some boulders and I warn you the Hudson River is darn cold right now but so beautiful.” He gave me another half grin, grabbed a blanket from the trunk and we climbed a short way.

Goose bumps rose on my arms from the breeze blowing across the water and without a jacket, I’m shaking thinking what an impression to make on this guy. And suddenly Scott wrapped his arms and the blanket around us and we were all alone with our body heat warming to overwhelm me with a yearning I’d never experienced before.

The kiss, tentative at first, made me tingle all over; I’d never had a boyfriend before and this feeling was new to me so here I am at nineteen not knowing what to do with a first kiss, for God sake.

“Well, uh hi Scott, you’re um, a good kisser.”

Laughing, he hugged me tight, said “Only good, huh well I can do better than that,” and this time the kiss curled my socks and knocked me for a loop.

Gasping for breath, I yelled, “Bingo,” and the wind carried my word across the river and boomeranged back for an echo that sounded like “Bingo, bing, bin.”

Sundays are good. Very good with WEWRIWA. More snow? Yes, but who cares. Soon spring with crocus pushing through the dirt. . .Is there dirt under the mountains of snow? Of course and when the temperature rises this very week to melt the ice and rivulets of racing water cascade down drains., we’ll see mud. Yippee! SPLAT!

Continuing with my new book, She Didn’t Say No. I love the title. It conjures up possibilities. The story begins in 1960. Last week at the college library on Saturday, nineteen year old studious Grace Meredith meets Big Man on Campus, Scott Dwyer, Captain of the Swim team, who has taken an interest in her. What happens next unfolds a bit more of the story. They talk about school, goals at first.

excerpt in eight: Grace answers his question regarding her future plans. Say No CVR ARe

“I plan to be a veterinarian and how about you?”

“Law with a strong leaning toward criminal justice.”

“Like FBI or Police Academy?”

He frowned and said, “Not sure, it’s all so far away but maybe I’ll specialize in the K-9 Corp so we both care about animals.”

He sat back and appeared to be very pleased with himself.

I liked his self confidence, something I lacked even though I’d boasted about not being afraid of anything although my parents frightened me with their expectations and pressure. I slammed the book shut and jumped to my feet, “Scott, how about playing hooky from studying and let’s go to the beach.”

And we were off to the beach in his shiny yellow Volkswagon Bug for the beginning of the ride that changed my life.
