Summer Solstice everyone. Longest day and then folks, it’s downhill.

Continuing with Spreading Her Wings one last time today. Last week Sally contacted Lance, the boss of the Rockland Cable Station who pays her big money fro every interview. She tells him about the new play at the Shubert that needs another backer and asks if he knows anyone. Of course, Lance knows everyone. When she gets home he calls to say get dressed, she’s coming with him to a fancy dinner with all the principles. She’ll be his associate as well as reporter. A note left for Steve, her husband, and soon she’s ready to go.

excerpt:
“We have a meeting with a few possible backers I know, so finish the champagne, you look very beautiful tonight, Sally. Also we’re having dinner with some wealthy people at a fine restaurant.” “With the nice compliment and promise of dinner, I’m delighted to be your guest, Mr. Jordan.”

The BMW rolled up in front of Patsy’s, a top celebrities’ favorite restaurant.
“Whoa, Lance, you really know how to treat a woman, am I dressed for the occasion?”
He gave her that slick up and down all around penetrating gaze. “There’s something about you, Sally, that no matter what you wear, say or do, even though you’re married and a tad older than I am, I can’t stop thinking of you so yes, you’re perfect. “ He tucked her hand in his. “Let’s see what we can accomplish in the elite paradise.”
As they sauntered in, Lance whispered, “Be yourself and everyone will love you but not as much as I do, of course.”

Hi Gang,

Things are brighter in our household now. Don ‘s feeling well enough to work so I can get back to Grandest, three cats, and writing. Do you ever feel promotion takes up too much time? I do, Does anyone know mature and other blogs that might like what I write? I’d sure appreciate some direction.

Spreading Her Wings resolves one problem and heads right into another this week.

Last week, with Misty’s help,  Clarabelle, now Claire, reveals she chooses to be a costume designer.

Excerpt:

“Daddy, I love you but I don’t love what you’re doing here.”
He lit a cigar and said,“I’m busy and you’re taking me away from serious business, Clarabelle, so run along back to the stage where you belong.”
Grabbing his jacket, she wouldn’t let him leave and said, “No it’s my life so listen and don’t call me that silly name any more, call me Claire.”
“ I’ve given you everything since your Mother passed on and now you’re complaining?”
“Everything you wanted me to be but how about what I want? I’ve been taking art classes using my own money to be a costume designer and you’re not gonna stop me.”

“I just had to tell you and I don’t want you to invest money just so I could be somebody I’m not meant to be, Daddy, please forgive me.”
“Oh Geez, honey, let’s forgive each other ’cause you know I’m just a big lucky Irisher with no idea how to raise a kid all by myself.”
“Let’s get a copy of the script to read at home and daddy, one of my teachers is a widow . . .”
“Ya think it’s not too soon?”

What a week! Hubs who is usually strong and healthy turned sick and I became caregiver for a change.

Son in Denmark gave me an easy recipe for getting rid of little weeds in our lovely walkway so muscular me worked on that, one more bit to do. And computer died. Rather the battery did requiring a new -a whole new apparatus I need a map to find my important stuff like my docs. HELP! If you live in my area, Rockland County, NY the place to go is Computuners in Nanuet, the best most adept and kind , fast too  who will tweak and help you find your way 9-9 all week.

And now dear, WEWRIWA, here’s a snippet to clear up the mystery in this part of my 5 Star story Spreading her Wings. When last seen, the major money man dragged his triple threat daughter in to the audition held at the Shubert Theater. On Broadway. This scene takes place during a break right after Misty Welles has auditioned a key scene with Sandor knocking the director’s socks off.

Excerpt in ten:

Misty stretched out her long legs to search for the sandwich Sandor made for her and said, “Hi, I’m Misty Welles, if you didn’t have lunch, I’ll share with you.”
The thin girl in a worn leotard looked surprised that anyone talked to her and replied, “Uh, no I didn’t think to bring a sandwich.”
“No prob, I share and I might even have two because I think Sandor packed an extra one.”
“You’re Clarabelle, right?”
“Uh huh, stupid name but my father loves it.”
Misty thought for a minute and then in a burst of goodwill and kindness she spoke quietly,
“if you don’t mind, I’d think about Claire, it’s nicer for show business.”
The girl looked up from her drawing pad, eyes wide with surprise and said,“that’s the nicest thing anyone ever said to me, Claire. pretty name.“

She leaned close to Misty, “I don’t care about show business but father dragged me here and he’s forcing the producer to make me the star.”
Shocked, Misty almost slid off her chair, “I went to college to specialize in singing, dance and acting just like all of us auditioning and that’s years of training and a huge expense to our parents and you don’t care?”
“All I want to do is be a costume designer, there’s so much to learn and I did it when he was out of town or late at work because I love creating costumes.”

Memorial Day Weekend. How well we remember and never forget our men and and women who support and fight for our country. My first love , a pilot in the Strategic Command who landed on a wing and a prayer the first time his bomber- a B 26 flew to England during the Korean War and later flew KC 97’s-Air refueling. a hazard all by it self. And then they planned atomic Bomb missions, never carried out, thank God. What a time.

And now to Weekend Writers Warriors for some fun with constructive critique for all.

Spreading Her Wings continues since there’s been so much enthusiasm for this story. The last scene took place where serious men were investing in the show on Broadway until the biggest investor walked in with his gawky daughter-the triple threat, she can’t dance, can’t sing, can’t act.

Excerpt in nine:
A crowd of men gathered around a burly Irishman who roared disapproval at the audition process.
“My daughter is as good as any of the girls in there.”
A soft spoken man pulled him aside just close enough for Sally and Teresa to hear.
“Mr. O’Malley, you are the major investor in the show and you want the play to be a success don’t you?”
“Of course and I also want my daughter to be a star.”
“Sir, she may not be quite ready for that because it takes years of training to . . .”
The bigger man grabbed him by his collar to lift him up eye to eye.
“You want a play and I got the dough so shut your face and get Clarabelle ready.”
He dropped him to the sidewalk to leave him eyes popping with fear.

Happy Month of May Older Americans Month. I love the idea of celebrating a whole month for the elderly Americans. You may not be there yet but one day you may wake up and find you’re a grandparent just like me.

It’s also almost Sunday and time to share our snippets so let’s have at it. My story is titled Spreading Her Wings. Sally Kirkwood is the friendly neighborhood reporter who helps Teresa find her daughter Misty, self involved in preparing for a Broadway audition.
As many of you know I was an actor in NYC for years. My take on this story is very real.

excerpt in eight:
In the darkened theatre, several men sat talking, computers on laps, taking notes while the director and his assistant rubbed their hands in anticipation.

Jerry Kaufman, the chief producer’s job was to gather the money to get the play up and running and already the men here had already pledged a bunch of dough.

The last man to arrive came up the aisle with a gawky girl in tow.

“Oh shit, please tell me she’s not the daughter he wants as the lead in the play.”

Seymour, his assistant, nudged him in the arm and said, “Jerry, she’s the girl O’Malley wants as the lead
and right away I can tell she’s a triple threat; can’t dance, can’t sing, can’t act.”

“The nerve of him coming in late when all the boys and girls are already lined up.”

“Money makes the world go around, Jerry so work with it and say hello at least.”

Jerry rose from his slump in the auditorium; “Hi Mr. O’Malley. How are you and who is this young lady?”

The Merry month of May, you bethcha. So Spreading Her Wings will not be published for a few but do I worry? heck no. Already I’ve started writing another story, this time a novel to be discussused with all my friends at WEWRIWA very soon. Meanwhile to continue where I left off last week where Sally receives the early morning call from a neighbor screaming that her daughter is missing, Sally, a reporter races over to Teresa’s home three blocks away to find out how she can help. Sally asks the mother a bunch of questions to begin.

excerpt in eight:

“She’s just a kid, eighteen, she graduated way ahead of herself dancing, singing, and acting classes at Emerson in Boston with her goal to be a super star, a triple threat she calls it, excellent in all that’s needed for musicals and her drama skills are above average so Misty is confidence personified for audition. Her voice broke.

Sally recalled Teresa’s beautiful voice accompanied by her own piano playing, so much talent in the family.

“Make some coffee while I think, please and I would definitely look at casting calls in Variety.”
My guess is she got a call about an audition and drove off to someone’s apartment or office to find out about the part.”
Soon coffee filled the room with a strong aroma; Sally took a long drink and asked if Teresa had looked in Misty’s room.
Teresa cried, shook her head and Sally told to her take a deep breath, calm down and see if her daughter had left a clue in her room; a clue, for God’s sake like Nancy Drew solves a Mystery, one of her favorite series of books when she was a kid.

In the second drawer where Misty left an old torn tee shirt, her terrified yet excited mother screamed;
“I found something, crumpled paper I can hardly read.” Then squinting, she read, Tues, 11 a.m. Shubert Theatre, B’way, Sandor.
“Sandor who?” and Teresa shook her head.
“To the Shubert Theatre to find your Misty.”
