My one and only daughter’s birthday. So many son’s and then a female. How lovely. With complications and a near death experience yet I lived to tell the tale.

Today’s tale, as we know a WIP is in progress, and so I introduce the heroine of The Doll.

Excerpt:Teen age Reva Mercer had a dream that one day she’d gather her saved dollars and Pa’s hidden money, make a run for the bus to leave the darned Keys and head for the Nursing College where she’d learn to care for sick people. One night that’s exactly what she did, with him sleeping and her all packed for her oh -so-near-better life. Officer O’Brien pulled up next to Reva just as she was ready to board the bus. “And where are you going this night, young lady?” The young woman gave him the flirty eyes that knocked him out every time but he grabbed her arm as she pulled away just in time.

The hours passed , dawn came and before much longer the bus stopped at a pretty section of Florida with a big sign directing her to The College. She staggered off the bus after a few hours of sleep and a peanut butter sandwich made at home and Reva trudged up the crushed stone walkway to the front door and stumbled in. Backpack slung over her shoulder, a kindly woman greeted her saying, “You must be our long lost Reva Mercer.”

The young girl nodded as if to say yes, that’s me and crumpled into mess on the floor.

There were a lot of questions too young Reva would have to answer before she entered the college.

A moment with Telly Savalas

What a day. I even got a lollipop from the big guy, and he said “who loves you.”We worked on the east side on the water just a few of us. I had a nice part playing ball with a little girl  and the bad thing was I forgot where I parked my car. Not the best plan ever.  I did locate the car, of course. Meanwhile, the staff were none too pleasant  but I kept my chin up and did my stuff. Show business has ups and downs. It can be so pleasant and so awful. Outsiders think it’s just  easy and fun. I’m here to say it’s difficult work.

Kojak: Season One (DVD)

The best part that day was The star. What a peach. So pleasant and full of fun. We lost a terrific man when we lost him.

Thanks for listening.

SPRING!!!!  OMG, how exciting. So what it may snow fall for a day or two. This has been a great winter.

Here comes the further adventures of Charlie Costigan. Aunt and uncle have given her the choice of private school or public. She doesn’t want to cause them to spend extra money but off uncle takes her to  the best private school nearby. Dressed in new clothes, Charlie straightens her shoulders as she leaves the limousine. Uncle Stuart introduces her to his friend , the head mistress, and tells her to call Robert when she is finished with testing.

excerpt:

I sat alone in a large room filled with, I did quick scan, fifty desks;”When the clock strikes eight thirty, begin,” said Sally the proctor and she disappeared.

I finished in fifty five minutes; she returned  to find me eating an apple and drinking from a bottle of water.

Stunned, she said, “It always takes at least two hours to finish so now I’ll take you to the head mistress.”

Confident I aced everything, multiple choice is good if you have multiple personalities.

Mrs. Larimore left her important place behind her desk and sat next to me, a frown between her eyebrows. “The girls who attend Hamilton Academy are from privileged backgrounds and from what I understand you come from a small town in Minnesota, a different social strata.

Yeah, I got it, they ‘re rich__ and I’m a dirt farmer, by comparison.

Sally burst in with my test scores saying “you’ve got to see this.”

After reading my scores, Mrs. Larimore smiled and asked if I’d like to see the playing field, the gymnasium, lunchroom.

“Thank you but no , I’ll call Robert to bring me back to my family to discuss this morning”; and Charlie straightened her new clothes and left leaving Mrs. Larimore speechless.

A Moment With Michael Douglas. . .

Yes, I was thereCharmaine Photo for Pinterest. The last day of Fatal Attraction, spirits high. We were in ,would you believe , a bowling alley. No I didn’t bowl. I played the mother of one of the kids. Dressed in a plaid shirt and jeans, I watched the scene. Michael hit strike after strike beaming the whole time. Leave it to me, during the break, I strolled over to him as if we were old friends. “Michael, I loved your movie, “Running.”

The  handsome star lit up. “I don’t know why it didn’t do well at the box office.” I patted his arm. “Well, my husband and I loved it.” He hugged me, the director called places and work began again. An easy morning on set for a movie that turned out to be a huge success.

You can’t forsee the future, of course. Later he married Catherine Zeta Jones and had two children. My precious husband died and I remarried a sweet man to begin a new life. Michael battled cancer; I lost my voice. I write books. Life changes. We move on.

This is what I do now. . .every day. And I love writing.

Daylight saving Time. Don’t you love it?

Another ten from Reconstructing Charlie and maybe I’ll move on since my latest book, Together, Again was just released and I’m ecstatic. The last piece of the series is finished and will soon be translated in Spanish and French. Folks, I’m thrilled, to say the least.

Charlie and Aunt Eleanor go shopping:

Excerpt:A knock at the door and she entered dressed to shop; pretty in a white sweater set with pearls, a print silk skirt and white pumps, the picture of a summer garden. By comparison, I looked like a lumberjack next to my aunt.

We sat in the big limousine driven by Robert and drove to a place called the Magnificent Mile, Michigan Boulevard.”What are the latest fall fashions for my niece entering high school?” Corrine, the salesperson rattled off a list: “form fitting tee shirts short in length showing a hint of bare midriff with wide blue jeans;leggings with slouch socks and white Keds and long loose sweaters.”

I didn’t have a clue about leggings and slouch socks but when she said bare midriffs, I thought-get me out of here.

I needed something to cover my butt and androgynous was my style.

Over lunch, Aunt Eleanor confided in me,”Stuart and I were never blessed with children and now you’re here with us. Somehow, fate in the name of Elizabeth, brought you to our door and I want you to know you may trust me although I’m not your mother.”

The waiter came and I ate my first shrimp salad thinking of what she just said.

The Son Also Rises. . .

With a wallop this time. My youngest son, Paul, multi-talented as a performer and he also writes with insight and clarity. I discovered this when he and Eva came to NY to care for me during the serious illness in January. As you, my friends know, nothing stops me from writing. Paul came into my small office as I typed . He watched and gently lifted my bones up and out of his way after saying , “Whoa.”

He read a chapter and before my eyes, took it apart to clarify the meaning. “Think more about how to write what you have in mind. Don’t rush. Make sense of the situation.”

Somewhere in the distant past, I recalled my publisher saying, don’t rush. Paul hit a home run with me years later. I began again. While they were here, as I returned to health, I wrote a little and when, to my sadness, they had to leave, Paul asked me send chapters he would edit and return. And so a collaboration formed, mother and son. I suggested he do consulting and editing for other writers. Long distance works with Skype and email. He laughed and said it’s part of what I do, Mom.

So I’m spreading the word. Many of you have read my work  and know I’m no slouch at putting words together. One consultation on Skype plus one edited chapter of five pages-fifty dollars. After that the cost is twenty five dollars per 5 edited pages. That takes Paul ninety minutes of work. The concept is to help writers think more about how to write what they have in mind, to express what they want.

Paul and Eva on their wedding day. What a team. She is a well known artist and he, well he is my extra ordinary son.

Thanks for your support, my friends.

3/6/16 WEWRIWA

Hi Gang. The lying weatherman claimed we’d have seventy degrees by the middle of the week. Snow two days ago and now the sweet smell of spring. The beach calls to me. I finished one book today and another will be released 3/11 Here’s the amazing news. Vanilla Heart, my publisher is having several books translated into foreign languages and Reconstructing Charlie is one of them. I’d jump in the air with joy but I’m afraid I’d break bones on the way down.

Last week Charlie had a welcome arms greeting from the aunt she didn’t know existed. Today I’ll fill you in a bit further. After a delicious breakfast with her aunt where she learned an inside story of her mother as a child and more than she needed to know about her new aunt and uncle, aunt Eleanor showed Charlie upstairs to a guest room on the second floor.

Excerpt: She left, footsteps muffled by the thick carpet; her scent lingered, something light and sweet. The room was breathtaking with everything so perfect, matched, luxurious and a four poster bed I tried out to bounce on a few times. The past twenty four hours hit me; did the cops believe Mom or were they searching for me, the piece of shit who ran away like a coward leaving my family.

I ran to the bathroom, unbuttoned my dress to hang it up but too late my aunt was in the doorway with me in my shabby bra and panties. She had her hand over her mouth as she saw my bruises__on my back and arms.

“Oh Charlie.”

“I heal fast, Aunt Eleanor; in two weeks they’ll be gone and no one will ever hurt me again, I promise,” and a flood of tears released from me.

She held me in her arms the way I’d held Mom a million times. My aunt was older and felt kind of fragile but I bet she had a core of steel. Backing away with tears in her eyes, my aunt left, her silk dress spotted with my guilt and shame.

2/28/6 WEWRIWA

How ’bout this, dear friends. We are almost into Spring. On with the shorts. . .almost Welcome to WEWRIWA and one more snitch of Reconstructing Charlie, a story that had me crying for six months until the end. I didn’t want to raise another kid. Mine were grown up and then I had a dream. Oh well. She turned out fine so here goes. Last week she killed her father to save her mother. Mom packed a bag with Charlie’s clothes and told her to run for the bus. She also gave her a note to deliver to relatives in Chicago, an aunt and uncle she didn’t know existed. She arrives, at age fifteen, in this wondrous city, hitches a ride with a cop to Lake Shore Drive. The name sounds so pretty.

excerpt: I watched the cop named Patrick Donnelly drive away and stood before the front door of a tall building that looked like a picture come to life. Mom’s letter in hand, I rang to hear chimes echo somewhere in the house; a man in black opened the door.

A woman who looked familiar , an older version of Mom, walked down a curved staircase to move as if she floated toward me and  cried out,”Elizabeth,”  with arms outstretched, she embraced me.

Mistaken identity I thought because she looked like my mom and she believed I was her sister; for a moment we both cried but just for a moment.

With hands so soft, she’d never washed a dish, she held me at arms length to declare, “You are Elizabeth’s daughter.”

She lifted  a silver bell, shook it , and the man in black appeared. “Edgar, this is my niece and she’s hungry.” His expression didn’t change as if nieces showed up every day.

“The dress you’re wearing is one I purchased for her long ago.” My elegant aunt spoke in a voice like a movie star so different from back home.

Introducing Tommy, the sweetest Pit Bull ever

Last night I had a sleepover with Grandest. Of course that includes Gracie the dearest brown lab rescued a few years ago and here is Tommy, my boy friend. He sits his big self on my thin lap and kisses his Granny. Delicious.  Gracie loves if you throw a tennis ball a thousand times and Tommy is a lover. All I do is write in between kisses, laughter and an attempt at gluten free pizza. Sleep happens when Grandest decides we are both tired and she closes her beautiful eyes. Then during the night, she bops me over the nose or forehead and I think of a new chapter. Oh yeah! Life at daughter’s. It’s fun.

So innocent. NOT!

2/21/16 WEWRIWA

Sixty degrees folks. Oh yeah and do we love it in New York. Hubs takes me for a drag around the block now that I’m better. I left my cane home when I went to Grandest yesterday, first time in a long while and I am filled with possibilities.

Welcome to WEWRIWA where today I continue with Reconstructing Charlie. Last week  Charlie had to kill  dear old dad before he destroyed Mom. What happens next.

Excerpt: Mom’s thick auburn hair came loose from her bun and she looked so pretty bending over him, a finger pressed to his neck as if she was a cop. Then she wiped my fingerprints off the tire iron and replaced them with hers. I watched Mom change from quiet refined Liz Costigan to someone I didn’t know.

“I packed my clothes and ran away sixteen years ago,” she said, “I was wild and out-of-control.”

She pushed me toward the shower but I sensed she was too busy to look back so I crept to the kitchen to make sure he was really dead. His eyes had turned to an empty stare.

I watched Mom empty my clothes into a suitcase, for what, I wondered? She placed a long chain around my neck with a locket and when I said, what’s in the locket, she said, “two sisters, one wise and one foolish. Now listen hard, precious girl; money and education and don’t let the boys catch your scent, keep clean. That’s something I forgot.”
